Plant Spacing Calculator

How many plants fit in your garden bed?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between grid and offset spacing?
Grid spacing places plants in straight rows and columns. Offset (staggered) spacing shifts every other row by half the spacing distance, fitting about 15%% more plants in the same area. Offset is more efficient but slightly harder to maintain and weed.
Where do I find the spacing for my plant?
Check the seed packet or plant tag. Common spacings: lettuce 6 inches, peppers 18 inches, tomatoes 24 inches, squash 36 inches. When in doubt, give plants slightly more room rather than less.
